The importance of being IATA

Iata Official Logo

“Para ser un operador de logística eficiente es necesario contar con relaciones sólidas con transportistas, agentes de aduana y otras figuras que promuevan el cumplimiento”

Over the years, this highly prestigious organization, IATA, has led the search for solutions and promoted cutting-edge practices to streamline the air cargo transportation.

What is IATA?

Behind every flight, there exists a complex network of regulations, rules, and standards that make its safe and efficient operation possible. In this context, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) plays a crucial role.

Its primary objective is to represent, lead, and serve the airline industry to promote growth and air services for the benefit of consumers worldwide. With over 75 years of experience standardizing aviation processes and solving critical issues related to:

  • Safety
  • Sustainability
  • Costs
  • Infraestructure development
  • Customer experience

Currently, it has 300 members representing 83% of the world's air traffic and more than 100,000 accredited cargo and travel agents.

Benefits of IATA Certification

Being part of the IATA agent network ensures that operations adhere to a validated framework to meet regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices for providing air cargo transportation services. This represents:

Advantages of being an IATA cargo agent:
  • Access to the global distribution networl of proven-quality airlines-
  • Offering services under industry regulatory frameworks.
  • Being trained to handle any type of air movement.
  • Expanding access to competitive routes and rates.
  • Having specialized knowledge in the air transportation documentation.

Furthermore, with an IATA number, it is possible to access the association's Cargo Accounts Settlement System (CASS) and facilitate financial transactions between agents and transportation providers.

In summary, a certified logistics operator stays updated with the latest industry regulations and requirements, minimizing the chances of errors, issues during the shipping process, and administrative burdens.

How to Obtain IATA Certification?

To obtain the certificate, it is vital that logistics operators meet certain requirements and follow a specific process to validate their knowledge.

Among the first steps is for the executive and operational team to complete a course on air waybill handling that supports their knowledge and professionalism in international air cargo movements.

Likewise, it is important for companies to demonstrate their financial stability by sharing:

  • Financial statements.
  • Air cargo sales volumes.
  • Who the partners and investors supporting the project are.
  • Sales projections for the coming years.

Last but not least, it is crucial for logistics operators seeking this certification to have insurance policies. This way, the network will have protection against accidents or losses.
